In the spring our trees come alive after the winter hibernation. Pruning, the most
common of all tree preservation procedures, should be at the top of your “Spring
Cleaning” list. Trees should be pruned every two to four years. It is best to start
pruning trees two years and older regularly. Whether your trees are newly planted
or towering and mature they provide a surprising amount of value to the property,
a value that increases with the condition of the tree. A healthy well maintained
tree is not only beautiful, but it can add value to your home or office.

There are many reasons to prune: health of the tree, aesthetics, establishing and
maintaining structure, to allow the tree to “breath” by thinning the trees canopy, to
eliminate hazardous branches, and to remove diseased or insect infested areas.
Every branch should be removed with a specific reason in mind, as the pruning
process could affect the health and growth of the tree. When it comes to removing
safety hazards, such as dead, diseased, or weak limbs, the sooner you to attend
to the issue, the better. These limbs can cause damage to structures and injury
to people. What you may not see can be a hazard to by scheduling a free
estimate a local tree specialist can come and inform you of any hazards or health
risks of the tree.

What you may think is a good amount to remove it may not be. The amount of live
tissue that should be removed depends on a variety of factors, including size,
species, age, and the actual pruning purpose. Younger trees can tolerate more
pruning than mature trees. It is important to remember that a tree can recover
more easily from several small pruning wounds than from one large wound.
Pruning large trees can be dangerous. It usually involves working above the
ground with special equipment or using a chain saw. To maintain safety, it is
best to hire you local tree specialist to maintain the health and appearance of
your tree.

In our neighborhood there is a great amount of Mistletoe. Mistletoe is a parasite
that needs to be removed. It grows on the branches and trunk of a tree where it
forms pendent bushes and sends out roots that penetrate into the tree eventually
killing the tree. Here in our neighborhood mistletoe loves Pears, Ashes, Birches,
and Maples.
